SELECTED WORK

Complicated problems.
Working solutions.

Every organization has its own challenges. Here are two examples of what happens when I look for a better way to tackle them.

THE WORK BEHIND THE WORK

Not just websites. Solutions.

Some projects start small and grow into something much bigger. Others begin when I notice that several organizations are trying to solve the same problem on their own. Both are opportunities to build something that makes everyday work easier.

FEATURED PROJECT 01 · RETIRED RACEHORSE PROJECT

TROT Thoroughbred Registry Off the Track

From scoring system to organizational platform.

THE BIG PICTURE

What started as a way to simplify scoring for one event has grown into a custom platform supporting multiple programs and operations for the Retired Racehorse Project (RRP).

I began as a scoring volunteer at the Thoroughbred Makeover in 2016. In 2017, I offered to move the scoring process online and built what was then called the Makeover Management System.

As the organization's needs evolved, so did the application.

THE CHALLENGE

One event. A lot of moving pieces.

The original goal was straightforward: bring Thoroughbred Makeover scoring online. But event operations involve much more than scores, and the RRP needed specialized tools that could support its changing programs and workflows.

THE SOLUTION

Build what the organization needs.

TROT expanded from its original scoring role to support entries, stabling, scheduling, online horse listings, reporting, and the Real Rider Cup's entry management and scoring. Each addition was shaped by how the organization actually works.

BUILT TO ADAPT

Custom code that can move with you.

TROT began as a custom PHP application integrated with the RRP's Joomla website. After the organization moved its public-facing site to WordPress, the custom application was integrated there where needed. The platform continues to evolve.

FEATURED PROJECT 02 · SHARED SHOW MANAGEMENT

Hound Show Management

Better together.

THE BIG PICTURE

I originally built separate entry management systems for several hound shows. Eventually, I realized I was writing much of the same code again and again.

And participating hunts had their own frustration: entering the same hounds into different systems for different shows.

Instead of maintaining several separate applications, I suggested bringing everyone together in one shared platform.

THE CHALLENGE

Different shows. Familiar problems.

Each organization had similar needs, but separate systems meant duplicated development work, extra maintenance, and limits on what each show could afford individually. Hunts also had to repeatedly enter the same information.

THE SOLUTION

One application. Multiple shows.

Hound Show Management (HSM) brings organizers and participating hunts into one application. Hunts can reuse their hound records across shows and from year to year, while organizers manage their own shows, classes, and entries.

WHAT IT SUPPORTS

Multi-show entry managementShared hound recordsYear-to-year record reuseShow & class managementMultiple participating organizationsScoring functionality available for future adoption

THE BIGGER PICTURE

More capability, less duplication.

By recognizing the needs these organizations had in common, I was able to create a more sustainable platform that helps both organizers and participating hunts. It's a good reminder that sometimes the smartest solution comes from looking beyond one project at a time.

Custom application · Shared data · Entry management · Multi-organization workflows
